Notes - Edgar Elwell served as a Private in the American Civil War. He enlisted on August 22, 1862 and mustered in on September 3, as an 18 year old in Kirkwood, NY and served three years in the 137th New York State Volunteers beginning in Company F. He was then transfeerred to Company B on September 26.He enlisted with WIlliam and James Youngs. On October 29, 1863, Edgar was wounded in the thigh during the Battle of Wauhatchee, TN. He recuperated in a hospital in Nashville, TN. from October 1863 through Feb 1864. He was present at the battle of Gettysbug, PA and was with General Sherman in Atlanta. He mustered out with the unit on June 9, 1865 from a camp near Bladensburg, MD.
